The CTC year in review

We had a great meeting last Thursday-- a lot of energy and good discussion. If all goes well, we will start the spring by taking a tour of a major in-town connector trail and begin construction soon after. Hooray!

As 2010 comes to a close, I want to take a moment to remind you all how far we have come over the last year:

It was November, 2009 when Dan Mahon and I held our first meeting and trail tour. The tour took place near Crozet Park and there were 4 people present. Dan and I continued to talk and get the word out over the winter and then in April of 2010 (just 8 months ago!), the Crozet Trails Crew was formed. We didn't have a name yet (that didn't get decided until the May meeting) but we were excited to start building trails. In the spring months to follow, we spent several weekends at the Beaver Creek reservoir working on the Henley Hornets Trail. In June, we began work on the Greyrock Ponds Trail, clearing vegetation and discussing drainage problems. We worked through the summer and into September and by the end of October, we had designed and constructed a set of long steps leading to the Greyrock Ponds that would both control the erosion problems and provide an attractive entrance to the trail. By the end of October, we had also designed a banner, business cards, brochure, and an informational booth; we had marched in the Crozet Parade and worked with several volunteer groups; we had set up a booth at the 2-day Crozet Music Festival; and, quite impressively, we had organized and launched the First Annual Crozet Trails Day event. October was a phenominal month for us! Soon after that, we began working on the trails at Mint Springs and discussing opportunities for new projects for 2011.

It has been an amazing year and I want to thank every volunteer, sponsor, supporter, and event attendee. You all are influential and so motivating-- and I am confident that the CTC will flourish in the years to come with such a fantastic community behind us.

Happy Holidays to you all and I'll see you in 2011!!

Trailwork and meeting

Fa la la la la la lal alalal.
'Tis almost the season for family and food and celebration and holiday functions. Before all that hits, why not come out and do some trail work?
This Saturday, the CTC will be at Mint Springs from 9am-11 or so, working on clearing brush and preparing to build an overlook off the Fire Road trail (looking east).
The bigger the group, the better!
Bring pruners, loppers, and small hand saws if you have them. Gloves would be good too, as there are some briar bushes that need to be eradicated.

On Thursday, we will have our December meeting at Trailside Coffee, from 6pm-8pm. I will post the agenda next week.

I am really excited about some new ideas and developments, so I hope we have a good group at the meeting.

Updates and photos

Hello Crew!

With October coming to a close, we also conclude the "marketing and outreach" bonanza for the fall season. The Crozet Trails Day event (photos coming later)was a success and there are already plans forming for next year. Thank you to everyone who bought raffle tickets (and thanks to Relay Foods and Blue Ridge Mountain Sports for donating items!!). The items have now gone to the winners-- Congratulations to Ann, Tim, James, and Elizabeth!

The week prior to Crozet Trails Day, the CTC worked with two youth groups: WAHS 9th grade workday at Mint Springs (photos coming later) and Cub Scout Pack 114 workday at the Henley Hornets Trail (photos below). Both events were helpful and enjoyable and we hope to engage in more events like this in the future.

The upper section of the Grayrock Ponds Trail entrance is finished. If you are in the area, especially during a rain event, please go by and see how we did. If you notice any issues with erosion, please let me know.

There is a workday at Preddy Creek this Saturday (see previous post for details). This is a good chance for new Crew volunteers to learn more about how the County builds new trail systems. If you are interested in going and would like to carpool, let me know (either by comment on here or send me an email).

The next trail event in Crozet (as currently scheduled) will be a trail walk and trail work introduction on November 6th at Mint Springs Park. This walk will be led by Tucker or Dan from Albemarle County and will aim to orient everyone to the Mint Springs trail system, point out potential work day projects, and introduce new Crew members to trail work techniques and standards. Come on out and bring your family.

Our next Monthly Meeting will be held on November 11th (Thursday) at 6pm at the Crozet Mudhouse. Hope to see all of you there!

We had a great work day today at Grayrock. It is a work in progress and will take a few more days (and loads of rock) to complete, but it is already a vast improvement.

Thank you to the Grayrock residents who came out to help, David, John, Mark, Barb, Sandi, and others, plus a whole passel of terrific little helpers! And thank you Jacques Gates of the Marjorie Adams real estate team for the much-needed pizza lunch afterward. And, as always, thanks to the fantastic and dedicated CTCrew!

There will be a neighborhood-wide workday on Saturday, September 11th at 8am, so we need to prepare for that and make sure that CTC volunteers know what we are doing so that we can lead the neighborhood volunteers safely and efficiently.

If you can make it out this Saturday, that's terrific. Please try to carpool, as there is very limited parking near the work site. Call or email me if you'd like a ride or need directions.

LAST MINUTE WORK DAYS

Sorry for the late notice, but if any of you want to get dirty and do some trail building over the next few weekends, this is for you:
Saturday August 21st and Saturday August 28th
8:30am

Preddy Creek in northern Albemarle County (plug this address in to Mapquest: 3757 Burnley Station Rd Barboursville, VA 22923) I'm not sure it's 3757 exactly, but you will see the cars and the people in the field on your left.

These will be major workdays with many volunteers and so it's a great way to learn about trail work, if you are new to the party.
*************
In the afternoon of Saturday August 28th, we will gather at the Grayrock ponds trail to begin work on an erosion issue. This day will be dedicated to refining our process in preparation for an intensive neighborhood workday later in September (date TBD).
If you are interested in learning about installing steps and mitigating erosion on a heavily used trail, please call or email me (emmittster@gmail.com) and I'll let you know the time to meet and where to park (carpooling from off site is strongly recommended).

Grab your shovel and come join the fun!

Reminder

Looks like we have a final decision in the logo design selection. There is still time to vote (until next Thursday, August 12th) but as of now, there is a clear forerunner. We'll unveil the "winner" at the Monthly Meeting, next Thursday.

LOCATION CHANGE: This month's meeting will be at Trailside Coffee in Old Trail. 6pm, as usual. We appreciate the support of both coffee houses in Crozet and we will discuss the pros and cons of alternating our meeting location each month, versus selecting one permanent location.

I will post the agenda next week, but as a sneak peek: Now we have a logo, what can we do with it?; Fixing the erosion issue at Grayrock near the ponds; Eagle Scout projects; and recruiting for the Fall.

I look forward to seeing all of you at Trailside coffee on August 12th!!

LOGO OPTIONS- VOTE

At the July monthly meeting, we narrowed down the logo options to one basic design but weren't sure which font variation we liked the best. I have put together 6 options (see below) for you to look at. Please let me know (by way of comment or email) which one you prefer.

This has been a slow month for the CTC and I hope everyone is having a nice summer. If you are interested in staffing a table for one of the upcoming Crozet Farmer's Markets, please let me know. I'd like to have some marketing materials pulled together by mid-August so we can get the word out to the community before the fall.

We are still planning to have an intensive workday at Greyrock ponds next month, but are waiting on the details.

Beat the heat and stay hydrated!

UPDATE

The minutes from the July 8th meeting can be viewed by clicking on the "Monthly Meeting Minutes" tab above.

The CTC logo has been determined and will be posted here once the final design is complete.

There will be a community workday at the Greyrock ponds trail later in the summer. The CTC will reach out the Greyrock and Waylands Grant residents requesting that they join the workday.

At the Henley Hornets Trail there are 2 large logs that have been cut and need to be moved to the first stream crossing as part of the temporary bridge.

**Most likely the August monthly meeting will be held at Trailside Coffee in Old Trail. More details will come later.

Summertime for the CTC

One week into summer and I am already looking forward to crisp clear fall days, when working on the trails is magnificent and invigorating. Until then (September), the CTC will focus its efforts on activities other than building and maintaining trails.

Our last trail work day of the season will be this Saturday, July 3rd (see calendar for information). At our monthly meeting on July 8th, we will discuss involvement for the months of July and August.

Briefly, we would like to write several resolutions/ letters, solidfy a logo, create a few marketing materials, organize some information-stations, coordinate with the local schools and other groups, and prepare for an active and energetic fall season. For those of you who tend towards the "brains" side of the equation, these are your months to shine (and we need you!).

Also, this is a good time to relax by the pool or the lake and take evening walks with your families (don't forget to bring your hand pruners). And if you need something interesting to read this summer, Dan can provide you with a copy of Trail Building Standards. The fun never stops.

Enjoy the summer, stay cool and hydrated, and we'll see you next week!

Wednesday, June 23, 2010

CTC Logo

At the next monthly meeting, on July 8th, we will look at ideas for the CTC logo and make a decision on the official logo design. If you have any design ideas, please sketch them out as best as you can and either give them to me or bring them to the meeting.

If you want to have input on the logo, make sure to attend the meeting. Only attendees will have a "vote". We are trying to finalize the logo design soon so that we can move on with our marketing materials (fliers, trail signs, t-shirts, work vests, informational signs and cards...).

If you'd like more information on what the logo will be used for and suggestions regarding size, use of color, and format, please leave a comment or send me an email.

Thanks!

Help find missing boats

From Dan Mahon- Your friendly County Greenways Planner:

Two Boats Missing from the Mahon Fleet
Generally, I lend my boats out but this past Sunday these two disappeared without a friendly promise of return. If spotted please notify me Dan Mahon 434-806-3981 or the police 911. The boats were taken in the Crozet area, but could be most anywhere now.
On board the Dagger and also missing are a paddle, fishing gear and a lifejacket. Also note that the image below is not the boat…. the missing Dagger is the same general color but with a whitish sunburst pattern on the front deck.
Thanks for your help

We will be working on a trail clean-up project this Monday, starting at 5:30pm and working until 7:30 or so. The trail is in the Grey Rock and Waylands Grant neighborhoods, around the ponds and to the playground, for those of you who are familiar with the area. If you need suggestions of where to park, please contact me. County will supply tools, but if you have a machete or scythe/weed wacker that you feel comfortable with, please bring it. We will review "personal safety diameters". I suggest long pants and some bug repellant as well.
Look forward to seeing you there!!

Work and Learn opportunity next Saturday

From Dan Mahon (County Greenways and Trail planner):

Next weekend Saturday, June 19th, 8:00 - 12:00 I would like to invite the CTC to join us as we host the last work day of the season at the new Preddy Creek Park. With one more day of focused energy we can close a 3.5 mile trail started a year and a half ago and built with over 1000 hours of volunteer work. This is the primary trail for the park designed to serve a carefully planned future network of trails and interconnected places. The event will be a great training and skill building opportunity for the Crozet Crew as well as a way network with the greater trail building community. Wasn't Alex working on a trail work song?
DIRECTIONS: 29N 4 miles past the Airport Rd. intersection turn Right onto Burnely Station Rd. Follow Burnely Station Rd 2.6 miles. Park in open field on the left. Look for the CAMBC tool trailer where folks will be gathered around pancakes, coffee and maps. Happy Trails!

We had a very productive meeting last night and I will post the minutes as soon as I get them typed up.
A few updates:
  1. There will be no July 4th parade. Therefore, CTC will not be walking in the July 4th parade. That's too bad because Alex and Dan were working on quite a song and dance routine for us all.
  2. We need volunteers for 2 positions:
  • Local school liasion: This person would work with the CTC and the local schools to organize group work days, class adopt-a-trail program, and other collaborative projects.
  • Mid-week trail crew leader: This person will need to attend some trail work days and get approval from the County to lead trail crews. There has been some interest expressed in working on the trails during the week and so this person would also need to coordinate with interested parties. Tools will be provided by the county after approval.

If either of theses volunteer opportunities sound like something you'd be interested in, please email me or come to one of our work days or meetings.

Thanks!

CTC gets a mention in the June Crozet Gazette

See page 40 of the latest Crozet Gazette. Mike Marshall, the editor and publisher, joined the trail work Crew on May 22nd where he took some photos, asked questions and helped us clear a new section of trail. Thanks Mike. I hope the publicity brings out the masses of volunteers!

Bring your favorite tool if you want, and definately bring gloves, good shoes, and a friend or 5. It's going to be a really good time...and you just never know who may be making an appearance. :)

There are still 2-3 workdays left until completion, but please feel free to go check it out... and to come help on June 12th for the next workday. See map below:
